ISSUE 4: Self

New year, new me. We often throw around this overused yet contemporarily catchy slogan as we head on to another year ahead of us. New years mark a fresh milestone for us to look back to what we’ve done, transformed to, or dealt with throughout the past three hundred and sixty-five - or sixty-six - days. In a span of under fifty-two weeks, we went through new beginnings, unravelled the oddities surrounding our lives, or even reminisced for a more nostalgic past. The circumstances that befall on us greatly differ, and so starkly contrasting are the experiences we went through. However, through this all we share one common root; the ever-evolving state of our individualities.

There are diverse manifestations of selfhood. Some of us might want to be seen or identify as a studious entrepreneur, a rambunctious musician, an aspiring global politician, or even as something simple like a nurturing figure or a loyal friend. Backgrounds and upbringings can also shape us. Through the influence of ethnicities, faith, sets of values we’re exposed to, our surrounding environments, or communities, we might be the person we are today. We have many strengths and talents that can constitute as part of our identity. Our shortcomings and flaws can also be an integral part of our journey to fully embrace us for who we truly are. It’s also an inseparable component of life that makes us authentic human beings.

Mind Over Matter’s fourth issue will explore everything about you. Try to ponder on what precisely defines us. Can it be our idealized projection of selfhood in the eyes of others? Perhaps it’s our hopeful longings and highly-desired ambitions? Is it an activity or pastime we enjoy doing, or a concept we admire? Do our flaws and passions in life shape us beyond our? Do discover the nature of our individualities - the possibilities are limitless.

From what makes you uniquely different to the attributes you’re most proud of, we invite you to share your innermost thoughts freely. Start the year right by reflecting on your shortcomings, flaws, personalities, and strengths. Take pride in being proud of who you are. Compose your personalized articles, essays, photographs, artworks, illustrations, paintings, sculptures, or any other creation as long as it has something to do about you. All submissions should follow our guidelines as listed on our website, and must be sent to mindmattercollective@gmail.com from January 1 - February 15,  2020
